About Us

Who We Are

Since the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, the Japan Women’s Network for Disaster Risk Reduction has been making multi-level policy proposals in Japan, emphasizing both the importance of women’s participation in decision-making, and the need to incorporate perspectives of gender equality into policies concerning disaster prevention recovery and resilience building.

The Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) was adopted in 2005, and will remain in effect until next year. Our network is making recommendations for including gender perspective in disaster risk reduction (DRR) policy for inclusion in the “Post-2015 Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (HFA2)”, which is scheduled to be adopted at the third session of the UN World Conference on Disaster Reduction, to be held in Sendai, Japan in March, 2015. We invite all interested parties to exchange information and join with us in this effort, which is aimed at benefiting both women and men worldwide.
